Creativity is hard work! It’s easy to get stuck in the same old, boring rut.
What are you doing to stay creative? Bruce Nussbaum suggests in his book, Creative Intelligence, the more we practice creativity, the better we get at it.
According to A. J. Jacobs, in her article How To Be More Creative, creativity is a numbers game. It turns out that people who are more creative don’t have better ideas, they just have more of them, constantly brainstorming and trying new ideas.
Also check out Micheal Michalko’s article, 101 Tips on How to Become More Creative. He suggests cool ideas like opening the dictionary, finding a new word, and using it in a sentence (this is how I named my company by the way. Acclivity means rise and ascent.)
Another tip he gives is asking a child. They have the most creative ideas on the planet. I once asked my daughter Rylee how to eat an elephant (I thought she was going to suggest one bite at a time, but what I got was “Well, first you kill it, then you cook it!”) You simply never know what will come out of a child’s mouth. Speaking of asking a child, you HAVE to take a look at this TED Talk by Adora Svitak on what adults can learn from kids.
Just don’t let yourself get stuck in boring. Try new, fun, creative ideas to the same old problems.
My friend Lisa is one of the most creative people I know. Check out this awesome video she made for my website!
