As you read this, I’m waking up in Vegas (hopefully having won a bunch of money, but more likely broke, mildly hung over, and getting ready to fly back home!)  This was our first trip back since getting married there just over two years ago.  I’ll give you a full report next week.  For now, let’s talk about dreaming.

In the movie The Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner’s character heard a voice that said, “If you build it, he will come” which has turned into a more popular quote, “If you build it, they will come”.  In the movie they were referring to a baseball field.  In life, it refers to just about anything.

Too often, we sit around frustrated or unhappy with our current circumstances, and without even realizing it, we invite them to continue.  In a misguided attempt to figure out what we want, we focus on what we don’t want, and the simple act of doing that creates more of what we don’t want.

If you dream it, you will create it.  Instead of trying to change where you are, dream about where you want to end up.  I’ve done a dream board exercise with several groups, and it always leaves people feeling energized and motivated.  To create your own dream board, find some old magazines and start cutting out pictures.  Whenever you see a picture that represents something you want to be, have, or experience, cut it out.  Once you have a collection of images or words, you can create your own dream board.

While the exercise may seem silly, it’s a simple and powerful way to help you visualize success.  Once your mind has a very clear vision of success, it will find ways to fill in the gaps to help you get there.

What pictures will be on your dream board?

  1. Sounds the same as “positive thoughts, bring positive outcomes” in a daydreaming way.. My dream board would have a beach and a nice hot sun for a whole month. =D

  2. Someone once told me to dream as big as I can, to visualize what I wanted as grand as I wanted it (in all aspects: material, emotional, success, family, etc). Once I had that dream clear, to make a plan to get there by working backwards. Plan it out backwards, starting at the top (Ex: We’ll spend every weekend in our beautifully decorated and paid for vacation home…but…Before I redesign my vacation home, I have to purchase one and pay it off. And what will I need to purchase that vacation home on the coast of Maine? A hefty down payment. Where will that come from?, etc)
It’s not easy, but I really like that instead of saying “some day when we hit it big in Vegas,” you can turn that into, “the day we’ve completed all of these little steps.” I think this dream board is the perfect launch pad to those big dreams and I’m going to give it a try. I’m betting I might surprise myself with what it turns out I really want out of life versus what I think I want, once I really give it some thought and process. And of course, I’ll have to invest my husband’s dreams, too, so that my sway my own design because we’re a team (and marriage includes compromise).

    • Hey Sis! It’s a great way to look at it. I think you’re on to something with making sure you are clear on what you really want versus what you think you want. I don’t think most of us take the time to really figure out what it is we want. I’ll be working on my dream board this week. Hope you’re feeling great and that all is well there. Love you and miss you guys.

  3. Hello Anne! I love the idea of a dream board! Mine will have ROLLER SKATES (BLACK WITH PINK WHEELS), SWEAT, HELMET-KNEE PADS-MOUTH & WRIST GUARDS, MORE SWEAT, 10k IN MAY, ROCK HARD ABS, SWEAT & TEARS, HEALTHY FOODS, RUNNING SHOES, THIGH HIGH STOCKINGS WITH A FEW RIPS, INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES, BOOTIE-LICIOUS BEHINDS AND HEARTS WITH FEATHERS AND GLITTER.
Derby Tryouts are in April and the Jim Thorpe Courage Run is May 5. I think I may have just shared my PINTEREST Obsession here! Thanks for the reminder to get my dreams out of my head/heart and tell the universe “Watch Out-Here I Come!”

  4. I love this! I’m a big believer in creating your own reality and hanging around people who are negative Nellies really brings me down, so I’m always encouraging positive thinking in other (and trying to limit my exposure to negative thinking). I’ve never done a physical dream board, but I have one clearly created in my head and it keeps me on the right track every day!

    • You are so right about limiting your time with negative people. It’s important to surround yourself with people and situations that bring out the best in you and give you energy, rather than drain you.

  5. Good stuff, Anne! This goes along with my own personal project right now of eliminating negative toxic self talk and making choices that impact me in a positive way! Thanks!

  6. I’ve done something similar to this in a work environment also. It works there too!! My dream board would have my family happy, a college class schedule for me, a fit body, a bible falling apart from use, cruise tickets for me and my someone special, college acceptance offers for my youngest daughter, and lots and lots of pink anythings Thanks for your encouragement, and hope your trip to my hometown of Las Vegas was wonderful.
