When was the last time you played in the rain?

During the most recent rainstorm, my kids ran out in the rain, stomped in puddles, got soaking wet, and had a blast.  I’m sorry I didn’t join them.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the older I get, the more important it is to play in the rain, stop to get ice cream, attempt dancing on the Xbox Kinect (yes, I said attempt), and just play more.

When was the last time you played in the rain or simply felt carefree?  As I type this, I’ve got a list of things to do a mile long, and I don’t see it getting shorter any time soon.  It’s good to be busy, and I’m grateful to have more to do than time to do it, but sometimes it’s okay to stop, relax, and re-connect with your inner kid.

Check out a previous post on finding your “inner child”.

Your assignment for the week – Go play….in the rain, with the kids or pets, in your garden, or wherever.  Just have some fun and most importantly, SMILE!  I just learned that smiling can trick your brain into thinking you’re happy, even if you’re not!  Check out this article to learn more.

Here’s something that will give you a chuckle…Someone asked Evan what his mom did for a living.  He said, “I don’t know but she goes to lots of fancy hotels and gets paid for it”.  Gotta love kids.

Pssst…Leave a comment here (I always respond, just check back) and come play with us on Facebook!

      • Up here in Amarillo we haven’t seen much rain in a couple of years and we are conserving water but I think I may have to go play in the sprinkler this week when I do water the lawn. That will be a good substitute and almost as good as walking in the rain and with no lightening worries!

  1. Thank you, Anne. I always enjoy your Monday messages, and they almost always hit home for me. I had an experience this weekend of some spontaneous ‘fun’ — and have been revelling in it ever since. It was a reminder of the importance of ‘fun’ — and the need for spontanaity. And then, here is your blog to underscore the notion.

    You did it again!

    Keep up the good work!

  2. Anne~

We haven’t had a lot of rain here in Texas in awhile. But a couple of weeks ago we had a major drenching and guess what I did? Yep! I played in the rain! You are so right about finding your inner child. I was soaked to the bone but had a blast! Of course now my neighbors think I am crazy but that is fine with me! LOL

Have a wonderful day and thank you for always making me smile!

    ~Esther~

  3. Thanks for the encouragement. I am not sure how much you should encourage those of us who fall in the area of High “I.” Play seems to come pretty easily for us.
    Love Evan’s statement.

  4. I sooooo agree with your comments! Just like our cell phones – which are constantly in use – have to have their batteries re-charged regularly, we have to stop and re-charge our batteries regularly to continue to have peak performance.

And your comment about how your son described what you do for a living brought back a precious memory. It reminded me that years ago my daughter’s elementary school teacher told me that my daughter said that I went to meetings for a living! 🙂

  5. Sundays are usually clean house and do laundry day at my house. We managed to get all done before dinner. Yeah! Me and kiddos decided to play hide n seek-in the complete dark. Well I did use my cell phone to walk around the house finding them.lol We had a blast!

    • I love it! Hide-n-seek was one of my favorite games as a kid. I’m definitely going to do that this week with the kiddos. Great suggestion! So glad you’re playing!

  6. Great reminder. I am about to leave for vacation and even then I do not “play in the rain” enough. I not only will resolve to do this, I will follow up with you Anne to let you know what I do so I am accountable. Maybe I will even post my “rain dance” on facebook! Woo Hoo. As I am working like a crazy person to get everything done before I leave, I am now smiling at the thought of really letting go during my vacation.

Thank you Anne for you timely insight. You make a difference in my like. Thank you – keep it up.

    • Hi Julia,

So great to hear from you! I love that you guys get to take vacations and have fun together. And I love that you’ll follow up to have an “accountability buddy”. You are definitely on the right track, my friend. And definitely post your “rain dance” on FB! Have a great vacation! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

  7. I decided about 6 months ago I deserve recess as much as the elementary kids. We stop at middle school then it’s work from then on. House work, job work. Not anymore, I make it a point to schedule recess just like work, exercise and all the ‘must do’s’.
