What Are You Spreading?

Have you ever walked into a room and felt the tension before anyone said a word? Or been around someone so happy it was impossible not to smile?

That’s not just you being sensitive — it’s science.

Emotions Are Contagious

Emotions spread like glitter: a little goes a long way, and it sticks to everyone you come in contact with. Whether you mean to or not, you’re influencing the mood of the people around you — at home, at work, even standing in the checkout line at the grocery store.

A study by Facebook found that emotions are so contagious that simply scrolling your newsfeed can shift your mood. The more negative content you consume, the more negative content you share, and vice versa.

This happens because of mirror neurons — special cells in your brain that mimic what you observe. When someone near you is stressed, anxious, or angry, your brain “catches” that emotional state in milliseconds, before you’re even aware of it.

Ever notice how one frazzled person can hijack an entire meeting? Or how one genuinely joyful person can lift everyone’s spirits? That’s emotional contagion at work.

The good news is that positivity spreads too.

Calm, gratitude, and laughter are just as infectious as anxiety or fear. The smile you give to the barista, the thank-you note you send, the deep breath you take before responding in frustration — those tiny moments ripple outward.

In fact, research shows that positive emotions don’t just make people feel good — they also broaden thinking, boost creativity, and improve collaboration. So, when you choose to share calm or joy, you’re not just helping people feel better, you’re helping them do better.

You Set the Emotional Temperature

Every time you walk into a meeting, a conversation, or even your kitchen at the end of a long day, you are setting the emotional tone. People will take their cues from you.

This week, try an experiment:

Before your next meeting, carpool line pickup, or tough conversation, pause. Ask yourself:

What emotions do I want to spread right now?

Choose one simple action that sets that tone — a smile, a deep breath, a calm tone of voice.

It doesn’t take a grand gesture. Small shifts can completely change the emotional temperature of the room.

Because whether you realize it or not, you are contagious.
