Change Fatigue? Try This.

Change Fatigue? Try This.

Let’s be honest, change used to be like a surprise guest. You’d get a knock on the door, scramble to clean up, entertain it for a bit, and then, thankfully, it would leave.

Now?  Change doesn’t knock. It moves in, takes over your favorite chair, eats your snacks, and changes your Wi-Fi password.

Welcome to the era of constant disruption.

If you’re feeling exhausted, you’re not alone. It’s called change fatigue, and it’s what happens when we’re expected to pivot, adapt, and “stay positive” while juggling flaming swords— blindfolded, on a unicycle.

Here’s the good news. You don’t need to love change. You just need to build the muscle to handle it without burning out.

Here’s how:

1. Stop Wasting Energy Fighting Reality

I hate to break it to you, but resisting change doesn’t make it go away—it just makes you tired. Think of it like arguing with the weather. You can wish it’s sunny, but that won’t stop the rain. Accepting reality isn’t giving up; it’s freeing up energy to focus on what you can control.

2. Control Your “Change Story”

When faced with uncertainty, your brain loves to fill in the blanks, usually with worst-case scenarios. Pause and ask yourself: What’s the story I’m telling myself? Is that story serving me? If not, rewrite it. Instead of going from a negative to a positive, try going from negative to neutral. For example, shift your story from “this sucks” to “I’ll figure it out..”

3. Protect Your Time, Energy, and Attention

We protect our money with budgets, our house with locks, and our data with passwords, but when it comes to our time, energy, and attention, we hand them out like free samples at Costco. Change demands extra from you, so it’s time to get ruthless about boundaries. That means saying “no,” logging off, and reminding yourself that being busy isn’t the same as being productive.

4. Practice Micro-Moments of Resilience

You don’t need a spa day to reset (although it’s not a horrible idea). You need small, daily practices that recharge you like a mental pit stop. Deep breaths. A quick walk. Sleep. Laughing with a friend. It all adds up.

Since the pace of change isn’t going to slow down anytime soon, we have to learn to experience it differently.
